Longish post, I fear, so bear with me.
First and foremost a reminder that we will be meeting at the Greeno Centre, 45 Glebeland Gardens, Shepperton TW17 9DH from now on. Times as usual – doors open at 7.15pm, running until about 9.30pm. Ample parking. Tea and coffee as usual – we can use the centre’s mugs, but please wash up after yourselves and don’t leave all the washing up to the Committee!
This Friday is a hand sewing evening, so bring along anything you’re working on, and sit and chat to your friends, new and old.
We would also like to encourage you all to bring along any other handicrafts you do, whether it’s quilting-related, knitting, crocheting, lace-making, embroidery, stained glass making, jewellery – anything creative! And please consider showing the rest of the group what you do. This is your chance to blow your own trumpet and maybe get others interested in your particular favourite craft.
We have also decided that from now on the Show and Tell will be at the beginning of the evening (unless there’s a speaker) and we hope that this will allow more time for each person to talk about what they’ve made and will encourage questions and discussion about technique, colour choice, patterns etc. Often in the past, this has felt a bit rushed, and there has been chatting going on in the background. We hope that this new timing will give the Shower the attention they deserve.
Also in attendance on Friday will be two “Mystery Experts” wo have offered to answer questions and offer advice on any problems you may have – of a sewing nature, of course! So if you’re stuck on a particular aspect of quilting, whether it’s to do with thread or needles, or the colour of a border, ask away! It will be very informal, so you can approach them quietly, rather than in front of the group if you like. So bring along any sewing you’d like to ask about and they will do their best to help.
There are still places on the UFO day on Saturday 17th, £10 for members, so this might be your chance to get a quiet day away and get something finished. Bring your own lunch to Lyne Village Hall, 10am – 4pm. See Alex if you're interested in going.
We are also starting a new regular feature! Sheila Roberton has offered to run a Bring and Buy Table every month, with proceeds to group funds. Bring along any fabric, haberdashery etc and don’t forget to bring your purses so you can take away a bargain! Books and magazines are welcome, too, but we do ask that if they remain unsold at the end of the evening you take them back home with you. Sheila doesn’t have the storage space and they can be very heavy. Thank you.
Social Media – the new website is up and running! Take a look at www.thamesidequilters.co.uk and tell us what you think. Also, for those of you on Facebook, we have a Thameside Quilters page, and we encourage you to add photos, show reviews, favourite shops and services (as long as you have no vested interest in the two latter, of course!). The website and the FB page are linked, so you can get from one to the other with just a click. We’ve also linked in Project Linus, too. The more we use these media, the more people they reach, and therefore more potential members 😊
Last bit, I promise! The Data Protection Act is changing slightly in May 2018, and as a community group, we are obliged to show you what information we hold on you and give you the option to remove anything. We have your name, address, phone number and email address, and the details are only held by two members of the Committee – by me, as the person who sends you these monthly emails about the upcoming meeting, and the Membership Secretary. On Friday, we will be asking you to read a short information sheet on this and to initial the Membership Register to show that you agree with this. We will only use the info for these group emails and for emergencies – for example, if we need to cancel a meeting or workshop etc. We promise to keep the information safe and secure and never to pass it on to Third Parties.
See you on Friday – Happy Quilting!
On behalf of the Thameside Quilters Committee.
